I am from skinny, black cats,

From late nights of board games and adventures in Animal Crossing.

I am from the pale raised rancher,

Tangled up in a wild garden of sweet honeysuckle and poison ivy.

I am from the bleeding hearts, the hostas and crumbling stepping stones.

I’m from stuffing pillowcases with homemade sugar cookies

And family gatherings for crabs with Old Bay

From Sharon and David, a sister and two brothers.

I’m from talking too loud on the phone and adding salt to watermelon

And from 6 am coffee at grandmas.

I’m from “We are blessed and highly favored” and “God is Good All the Time”

And “Rise and Shine, and Give God the Glory, Glory!”

I’m from family dinners on the Sabbath, always with a prayer of thanksgiving.

I’m from Baltimore and the Eastern Shore and abroad.

From warm sour cream pound cake for breakfast and afternoon tea and scones.

I’m from hide-and-seek and dress up with my best friend, my sister.

From sitting by her side, holding her bundle of joy, my niece, my precious angel niece.

I’m from saying “I love you” in a McDonalds parking lot, and “I Do” in a quiet garden.

I’m from home movies on VHS that will make me laugh and cry

Tucked away in a box in the attic, but always tucked away in my heart.
